A speaker goes overtime, the next speaker, having started late ends late, and the schedule gradually fades away. This one did better than most—I think there was only one day when talks ended up starting noticeably later than they should. I have observed a similar problem at academic workshops, where a speaker is supposed to have a limited amount of time to present his paper, with the remaining time for questions and discussions. The more often speakers end up breaking the rules and using most of the time to present the paper the less likely those attending are to bother reading it in advance. The fewer read it in advance, the greater the incentive for the speaker to spend the time presenting it instead of discussing it. Seriously. It's fun. Labels: funny. Cyclo Cross is a big deal in some areas, and we've been fortunate enough here in Iowa that a few far sighted promoters took their passions for CX and put them to work creating events like "Night Cap Cross", "Spooky Cross", and, of course, "Jingle Cross". That's pretty crazy seeing as how Iowa is probably the last place anyone would think of for any World Cup, UCI sanctioned event to be occurring in. Well, as one might expect with such a big event, there are lots of satellite events and happenings going on within the umbrella of Jingle Cross weekend. One of those is actually a gravel ride, which the Jingle Cross brass have loaded down with some corporate, unmemorable name that rolls off the tongue like a train wreck. So, I am taking the liberty of calling it "Jingle Grind". I got to ride down that way on the last Geezer Ride this past Spring and it is amazing territory to ride through. The definition of a Personality Disorder is any set of persistent actions or beliefs which cause the individual, or those around him, difficulty.
Interesting. An "illness" which is dependent on historical, cultural and social context. This should immediately set alarm bells ringing. Why do we accept mental illnesses which have such a shoddy conceptual basis? Why are we so intellectually bereft that we permit these pernicious ideas to slither their way into the popular consciousness? So a person who holds firm to a set of beliefs which, in the eyes of observers, cause him problems in society is mentally ill. .
